Roy's love for animals began at a young age when he started adopting dogs and cats from local shelters. His mother instilled in him the belief that animals deserve love, dignity, and respect. Understanding that both domestic and wild animals rely on humans to thrive, Roy developed a deep commitment to their well-being. It wasn’t until he met his fiancé, and her family, that he realized he could take this commitment even further, working to find and provide homes for as many animals as possible. With a background in construction, Roy found the perfect blend of professional skills and personal passion. What started as a passion project soon grew into a larger mission, fueled by overwhelming support. Roy is grateful for the opportunity to help the community by providing a sanctuary for animals and a wonderful environment for his daughter to grow up in. His dedication to improving the lives of the animals we care for, combined with his experience supervising over 50 people, has made him an effective President on our Board.
Alexus has grown up caring for a wide range of animals, including domestic, exotic, livestock, and wildlife. Over the past decade, she has dedicated thousands of volunteer hours to education, environmental stewardship, rescue, and rehabilitation work across various organizations in Delaware and Maryland. As our Sanctuary's Animal Care Director—a key position on our board—Alexus uses her experience and education to ensure that the animals in our care receive the best possible attention, keeping them healthy and happy.
Maureen takes her role as our Vice President very seriously, advocating passionately for animals both large and small. A lifelong learner, she is always on the lookout for unusual and interesting information. Maureen leverages her education from the University of Delaware, where she earned undergraduate degrees in History, Women’s Studies, and Cultural Anthropology, to provide valuable insights and effectively engage with diverse groups within the community. Her experience as the Managing Director of the Iron Hill Museum and Science Center in Newark, DE—part of The Delaware Academy of Science, founded in 1962—where she speaks on natural history and historical topics with a focus on Indigenous and First Nations history, combined with her role on the Board of Directors of Native American Lifelines, an urban Native health center in Baltimore, MD, and Boston, MA, significantly enhances her contributions in helping us achieve the Sanctuary's goals. Additionally, as part of a multi-nation indigenous community, Maureen has been dancing at powwows and exploring her mixed-blood heritage alongside her twin sibling for over 30 years.
Cass has felt a deep connection to animals since childhood, vividly remembering the day her first cat came home when she was just five. She’s always believed animals communicate in ways many people miss—and she’s never hesitated to talk back.
While working at a local animal shelter, Cass met the founder of The Hartly Meadows - Alexus, and the two quickly bonded over their shared passion. Through that friendship, she was introduced to the sanctuary and knew right away she’d found something special.
Cass brings hands-on experience in animal care, a strong understanding of behavior and body language, and a background in customer service that shines through in her warmth and positivity. She’s honored to serve on the board and support a space where all animals can feel safe, seen, and loved.
CJ is most at peace when he’s surrounded by nature. An outdoorsman at heart, he finds clarity and calm in the quiet moments—listening to the wind in the trees, observing wildlife, and simply being present. That deep connection to the natural world is part of what led him to the sanctuary, where he now serves as a dedicated member of the board.
Introduced to the sanctuary through his fiancé, Cass, CJ quickly bonded with Roy over a shared love of history and a background in construction. Since then, he’s lent a hand building shelters for some of the animals and occasionally helps with feeding and care. CJ has always loved animals—especially goats—and instantly connected with Sheldon, one of the sanctuary’s most curious residents. He brings a grounded, hands-on energy to the team, along with a quiet empathy that animals, like Sheldon, seem to recognize right away.
